President Trump has continuously suggested Canada become the 51st U.S. state over the last few weeks.

This has sparked debates over his seriousness. However, a hot mic moment from Prime Minister Trudeau in a private meeting confirmed that Trump’s annexation idea of Canada is “a real thing.” Although the media was asked to leave before Trudeau spoke, CBC and The Toronto Star managed to hear and record his remarks.

“Mr. Trump has it in mind that the easiest way to do it is absorbing our country and it is a real thing. In my conversations with him on …” Trudeau said before the microphone cut out, according to CBC.

“I suggest that not only does the Trump administration know how many critical minerals we have, but that may be even why they keep talking about absorbing us and making us the 51st state,” Trudeau added, according to people in the room who listened to his comments. “They’re very aware of our resources, of what we have, and they very much want to be able to benefit from those.”

Trump first proposed annexing Canada during a November dinner with Trudeau and has also suggested taking Greenland. He argues Canada, a resource-rich NATO ally of 40 million people, hasn’t done enough to curb illegal immigration and fentanyl trafficking. Trump also notes the U.S. subsidizes Canada by $200 billion annually.
