HORROR ON THE HIGHWAY: Man driving stolen car causes fatal crash, multiple children killed

7

A man driving a stolen car slammed into another vehicle head-on on a Colorado highway Monday evening, killing another man and 3 children, and leaving 2 other children fighting for their lives.

The media is calling the 31-year-old driver of the stolen car a “Denver man.”  He was also killed in the crash, and has not yet been publicly identified.

However, the car was stolen in Aurora, Colorado, a city well known for being a hotbed for criminal activity by Venezuelan gangs.

The horrific crash happened on Highway 83 just east of Castle Rock, Colorado around dusk Monday evening, specifically at 4:39 pm.

From CBS News: It started with a Toyota Matrix driving south on Highway 83 when it went onto the right shoulder. The driver overcorrected and rolled into northbound traffic, where it hit a Ford Fusion head-on. A Ford pickup truck driving behind the Fusion managed to stop just short of the crash.

According to the CSP, the 31-year-old Denver man driving the Matrix was not wearing a seatbelt and was ejected from the vehicle when it rolled. He died at the scene.

The 35-year-old man from Colorado Springs driving the Fusion and three juvenile passengers in the back seat, an 8-year-old and a 12-year-old boy and a 12-year-old girl, were all killed in the crash. The 13-year-old girl in the front passenger seat and a 14-year-old boy in the back seat were both airlifted to the hospital with what are reported to be life-threatening injuries.

The Toyota had been stolen just one hour prior to the deadly crash.

CBS News further explainsIt is not clear exactly what caused the sedan to drive up onto that shoulder, but authorities later confirmed the Matrix was reported stolen out of Aurora on Monday afternoon. The Aurora police department said the vehicle was taken during a carjacking at the Nine Mile Station parking structure around 3:45 p.m.

The owner told police that a man approached her as she was getting into her vehicle, held the door open and then asked her for a ride. When she said no, the man reportedly pulled her from the driver’s seat and drove off in the Matrix. Police later confirmed he was the person driving the Matrix when it crashed.

The Douglas County Sheriff’s Department posted two short video clips of the horrific scene, as mangled car parts were seen strewn across the highway Monday night.

WATCH the report below for more details.  Again, the driver of the stolen car who caused the crash has not yet been publicly identified.
