The federal government has started releasing documents on aviator Amelia Earhart following an order from President Trump in September.
The newly released files include declassified reports, maps, messages, and other materials detailing Amelia Earhart’s final Pacific flight and the government’s search after her disappearance. Earhart became the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic in 1932, and five years later set out to circumnavigate the globe by air.
The press release says Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard began compiling the files after Trump’s September request. In an accompanying ODNI statement, Gabbard said the documents would “shine light on the disappearance of a beloved American aviator who has been at the center of public inquisition for decades.”
“Under President Trump’s leadership, we will continue the work to end the weaponization of intelligence and instead focus the Intelligence Community on finding the truth and telling the truth, and ensuring the safety, security, and freedom of the American people,” Gabbard continued.
Trump praised Earhart in a September Truth Social post, calling her an “Aviation Pioneer.”
“Amelia made it almost three quarters around the World before she suddenly, and without notice, vanished, never to be seen again,” Trump wrote. “Her disappearance, almost 90 years ago, has captivated millions.”
According to the ODNI release, the federal government will continue releasing Earhart-related records as more are identified.
“This initiative demonstrates President Trump’s and his administration’s commitment to rebuilding the American people’s trust in government agencies through increased transparency,” the press release states.
Beginning today, at @POTUS‘ direction, records related to Amelia Earhart’s final flight and disappearance 88 years ago will be declassified and shared with the American people.
