From Breitbart: NASA’s chief on Tuesday said the US space agency will invest $20 billion to develop a base on the Moon, while suspending its plans to create the lunar orbital space station known as Gateway.
“The agency intends to pause Gateway in its current form and shift focus to infrastructure that enables sustained surface operations,” Jared Isaacman said in a statement given during a day-long event at NASA headquarters in Washington.
“Despite challenges with some existing hardware, the agency will repurpose applicable equipment and leverage international partner commitments to support these objectives,” he said.
The European Space Agency among other international organizations were partners on the planned Gateway project.
“The Moon is the perfect proving ground for everything America needs to explore the solar system. Our astronauts will work with lunar soil to extract water and ice and produce propellant, a critical step toward one day manufacturing fuel on Mars. The goal is not flags and footprints, the goal is to stay,” Isaacman said.

Thank you to the NASA workforce, industry partners, and international allies who made Ignition possible.
We have the vision, resources, and experience. Now we move beyond presentations and PowerPoint and execute @POTUS’s vision for space superiority.

In a post on X Wednesday, Isaacman announced:
The last few months, and all the work that went into Ignition, was honestly the easy part. The very hard part is everything we do from here forward..
We are days away from Artemis II astronauts flying around the Moon. Then we immediately begin pulling in hardware and stacking for Artemis III in 2027. We have a Moon base to build, a nuclear spacecraft, SR-1 Freedom, to launch to Mars, and all the science and discovery that comes along with these inspiring endeavors.
Extremely difficult, in fact near impossible, is what the American people should expect and it is what we intend to deliver 🇺🇸
