Multiple European and NATO leaders are scheduled to join Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskyy in a visit with President Donald Trump at the White House Monday, as talks continue on a potential peace agreement between Russia and Ukraine.
This comes after Trump traveled to Anchorage, Alaska on Friday for a summit with Russian president Vladimir Putin.
Those expected to attend the meeting at the White House with Trump and Zelenskyy on Monday include:
- European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen
- French President Emmanuel Macron
- British Prime Minister Keir Starmer
- German Chancellor Friedrich Merz
- Italian Premier Giorgia Meloni
- Finnish President Alexander Stubb
- Secretary-general of the NATO military alliance, Mark Rutte
The media has portrayed the other leaders joining the meeting as an effort to ‘protect’ Zelenskyy from Trump.
The Associated Press wrote:
Leaders from Britain, France, Germany, Italy and Finland are rallying around the Ukrainian president after his exclusion from Trump’s summit on Friday with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Their pledge to be at Zelenskyy’s side at the White House on Monday is an apparent effort to ensure the meeting goes better than the last one in February, when Trump berated Zelenskyy in a heated Oval Office encounter.
“The Europeans are very afraid of the Oval Office scene being repeated and so they want to support Mr. Zelenskyy to the hilt,” said retired French Gen. Dominique Trinquand, a former head of France’s military mission at the United Nations.
Trump slammed the ‘fake news media’ in a series of Truth Social posts Sunday night, and wrote, “Big day at the White House tomorrow. Never had so many European Leaders at one time. My great honor to host them!!! President DJT.”
“The Fake News will say that it is a big loss for President Trump to host so many great European Leaders at our beautiful White House. Actually, it is a great honor for America!!!” he added.
Late Sunday night, Zelenskyy announced:
I have already arrived in Washington, tomorrow I am meeting with President Trump. Tomorrow we are also speaking with European leaders. I am grateful to @POTUS for the invitation. We all share a strong desire to end this war quickly and reliably.
And peace must be lasting. Not like it was years ago, when Ukraine was forced to give up Crimea and part of our East—part of Donbas—and Putin simply used it as a springboard for a new attack. Or when Ukraine was given so called “security guarantees” in 1994, but they didn’t work. Of course, Crimea should not have been given up then, just as Ukrainians did not give up Kyiv, Odesa, or Kharkiv after 2022. Ukrainians are fighting for their land, for their independence.
Now, our soldiers have successes in Donetsk and Sumy regions. I am confident that we will defend Ukraine, effectively guarantee security, and that our people will always be grateful to President Trump, everyone in America, and every partner and ally for their support and invaluable assistance. Russia must end this war, which it itself started. And I hope that our joint strength with America, with our European friends, will force Russia into a real peace. Thank you!
