HEALTH ALERT: Common cleaning chemical tied to spike in liver disease across US

From Fox News: Exposure to a common chemical used in dry cleaning and some consumer products has been linked to triple the risk of a dangerous liver disease, a new study suggests.

Tetrachloroethylene (PCE), which is also used in some adhesives, spot cleaners and stainless steel polish, was associated with three times greater odds of significant liver fibrosis in U.S. adults, according to research from the Keck School of Medicine of the University of Southern California.

Liver fibrosis is a buildup of scar tissue that can progress to liver cancer, liver failure or death, a press release stated.

The researchers also identified a dose-response relationship — meaning greater exposure to PCE led to a higher likelihood of developing liver fibrosis.

Out of 1,600 adults who were tested, researchers found approximately seven percent had detectable amounts of the chemical.

The Daily Mail also reported on the study, explaining that tetrachloroethylene (PCE) is commonly used in dry cleaning and present in everyday products like craft adhesives, stain removers and stainless steel polish.

The Daily Mail wrote:

Researchers measured PCE levels in the blood of more than 1,600 adults aged 20 and older. They found that approximately seven percent of this population had detectable amounts of the chemical.

People are exposed to the chemical when it evaporates into the air and inhale it. People with any detectable level of PCE in their blood had a three-fold higher risk of developing liver fibrosis marked by a buildup of scar tissue that can progress to liver cancer, liver failure or even death.

PCE is the primary solvent used in many dry-cleaning machines and workers breathe in this contaminated air all day, leading to high, chronic exposure.
