One Senate Republican has withdrawn his name from the list of potential candidates for Attorney General.

Sen. Eric Schmitt, who was previously the state Attorney General in Missouri (2019-2023) before winning his seat to the U.S. Senate in the 2022 elections, has announced that he prefers to continue to serve in the Senate.

Politico reporter Burgess Everett announced Monday morning, “News: Missouri Sen. Eric Schmitt told Trump transition that he’s withdrawing his name from consideration for attorney general, per a person familiar. The Missouri senator will help select judges and work to move Trump’s agenda in the Senate.”

Schmitt then responded by releasing the following statement:

Can confirm. I ran for the U.S. Senate to represent the people of the Show Me State and I’m just getting started.

The American people have given President @realDonaldTrump a mandate. A mandate to secure our border, make America energy dominant and fight for the forgotten men and women of this country. We need America First fighters who don’t just say they support the agenda but who are willing to stand in the breach and actually fight for it and for the hopes and dreams of the American people.

I’m ready to roll up my sleeves and be a champion for President Trump in the Senate.

Vice President-elect JD Vance then weighed in, writing, “Eric is one of the best. He’ll be a tremendous help to the president as we work to stop the weaponization of government against American citizens.”
