It’s a moment that instantly offends and brings out feelings of injustice. A boy asks Polish tennis star Kamil Majchrzak for his Asics-branded hat, the athlete obliges, and a grown man snatches the prize before the boy can claim it.
The incredible moment was caught on a live video posted to social media, and the netizens have already identified both parties in a bid to restore fairness in this singularly twisted situation.
It all started Thursday after Majchrzak’s five-set victory over No. 9 seed Karen Khachanov. He walked to the stands of Court 11 to sign autographs as the scene was captured live.
Then the offensive grab.
The New York Post reports:
Majchrzak took off his hat and attempted to hand it to a young boy in the stands — when the greedy guy clutching a tennis ball snatched the memento away and shoved it into his wife’s bag.
“What are you doing?” the outraged boy screamed at the shameless cap caper.
The hat hog ignored the devastated child and then thrust a water bottle into the tennis star’s face for another autograph.
Majchrzak, distracted by his many fans clamoring for autographs, did not notice the snatching incident. Later, he addressed the moment, writing on Instagram, “After the match I didn’t record that my cap didn’t get to the boy.”
He then set about trying to make things right.
“Hey Guys, could you help me find the Kid from my match,” Majchrzak wrote. “If it’s you (or your parents see this), please send me a DM.”
He later said he was “impressed by the power of the internet” when the boy was soon identified. But the internet wasn’t finished.
Enraged social media users set out to find the man behind the ugly spectacle, calling him a “jerk,” a “terrible man,” and an “ass—-.”
“Stealing from a child is completely disgusting,” wrote one upset Reddit user.
Another wrote: “Who is that bully?”
“Maturity doesn’t come with age, but the acts,” complained another.
These unhappy netizens will be happy to know that the man has reportedly been identified as a “top chief executive,” according to Spanish sports news site Marca.
Marca reported:
Thanks to the power of social media, the man was not allowed to fade from view. Online sleuths identified him as […] the CEO and owner of a Polish paving company called Drogbruk.
Following the incident, he disabled comments on his social accounts, perhaps unsurprisingly given the torrent of public condemnation.
Will a public apology come next? We shall see.
