FROSTY RESPONSE: Denmark counters Trump’s desires for Greenland acquisition

Denmark’s government pushed back after President Donald Trump named Louisiana Gov. Jeff Landry as special envoy to Greenland, signaling its displeasure with the move.

“President Trump’s announcement about the appointment of a special envoy to Greenland – and in particular its statements about the purpose hereby – is completely unacceptable,” Danish foreign minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen said Monday in a Facebook post, which was translated by the social platform. “That’s why we are now convening the US ambassador to the Department of State for a discussion.”

Trump on Sunday named Jeff Landry as his special envoy to Greenland, a Danish territory the former president has previously floated acquiring for the United States, even as Landry continues serving as Louisiana’s governor through January 2028.

On Truth Social, the president said Landry “understands how essential Greenland is to our National Security, and will strongly advance our Country’s Interests for the Safety, Security, and Survival of our Allies, and indeed, the World.”

President Trump first floated the idea of buying Greenland during his first term, revived it during his last campaign, and renewed the push after returning to the White House, citing U.S. national security. Ahead of Trump’s second inauguration in January, Landry publicly backed the proposal.

“President Donald J. Trump is absolutely right! We need to ensure that Greenland joins the United States. GREAT for them, GREAT for us! Let’s get it done!” Landry said in a post on X at the time.
