President-elect Donald Trump spoke briefly by phone with Argentine President Javier Milei on Tuesday, according to Milei’s spokesman. He called him his “favorite president.”

The conversation occurred just before Milei’s trip to Florida to attend CPAC and possibly meet Trump in person. He and Argentine President Javier Milei, who has led Argentina since December 2023, have publicly praised each other’s policies and previously met at CPAC in February. Milei, an economist and media personality, won Argentina’s presidency under his libertarian Liberty Advances party after defeating socialist Sergio Massa. Argentine spokesman Manuel Adorni announced that in a recent call, Trump told Milei, “you are my favorite president.”

Milei later posted a meme on Instagram celebrating Trump’s “favorite president” quote, captioned with Liberty Advances’ slogan, “long live liberty, damn it!” The details of the ten-minute conversation remain undisclosed, but Milei’s Foreign Minister Gerardo Werthein described it to Infobae as “a positive meeting between two mutual admirers committed to building a better world.”

Milei was among the first to congratulate Trump on Tuesday, sharing messages on social media celebrating his return to the White House, writing: “Congratulations on your formidable electoral victory. Now, Make America Great Again. You know that You can count on Argentina to carry out your task.”

Milei also posted an AI-generated image of Trump hugging a lion, the mascot of Liberty Advances:

Since taking office in December, Milei has emerged as a prominent right-wing leader, advocating libertarian economic policies to tackle inflation and poverty. Argentina’s inflation dropped significantly from 25.5% in December to 3.5% in September. Milei has removed restrictive socialist regulations, including a rent control law—leading to a housing boom—and lifted foreign investment limits. By October, Argentina had achieved a $16 billion trade surplus.

Milei’s foreign policy is staunchly pro-American and pro-Israel, marking a sharp shift from former President Alberto Fernandez’s focus on alliances with China and Iran. He recently fired Foreign Minister Diana Mondino after Argentina opposed U.S. sanctions on Cuba at the UN.
