FLASHBACK: Walz bragged about childcare business in Minnesota during 2024 VP debate before massive fraud scandal came to light

From the New York Post: Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz bragged about making it easier for people to get into the child care business during last year’s vice presidential debate with JD Vance, awkward resurfaced footage shows — as the state’s Somali immigrant community has been accused of bilking millions of dollars in aid meant for day care centers.

“We have to make it easier for folks to be able to get into [the child care] business and then to make sure that folks are able to pay for that. We were able to do it in Minnesota,” Walz said on stage as he proposed a federal paid family medical leave program.

The debate clip resurfaced following a mega-viral video from independent journalist Nick Shirley that exposed the vast scale of alleged fraud in the North Star State.

Many of the child care centers he visited had their doors shuttered despite receiving millions in aid from the state over the last several years, records reportedly show — including a day care with a misspelled sign that got $4 million in taxpayer money despite being empty.

Prominent X user @mazemoore shared a flashback video from the 2024 VPV debate between Walz and JD Vance, and mocked, “Yes Tim, you sure did make it easy for people to open childcare businesses. They don’t even need to provide childcare to get paid.”

“He’s in on the scam,” suggested Elon Musk.

Walz has repeatedly bragged about providing grants for childcare programs. Below are just a few of the many posts on X he has made on the topic:

Oct. 16, 2023: “Child care providers didn’t take this job to get rich, but they sure as heck didn’t take an oath of poverty. We’re providing direct funding to boost pay for child care providers – and build a strong child care system for middle class families across the state.”

Oct. 20, 2023: “We’re providing $316 million in direct funding to boost pay for child care providers all while building a stronger child care system for middle class families.”

January 31, 2024: “Yesterday we announced Minnesota’s largest-ever round of child care grants is now open. We’re ramping up our efforts to increase child care slots and invest in Minnesota’s child care providers and working families.”

May 15, 2024: “We’re going to bat to save Minnesota families money, and that starts with expanding access to child care. Today, I announced $6 million in child care grants – the largest-ever round – to create over 2,200 child care slots across the state.”

Oct. 1, 2024: “Last week, we announced funding to create thousands of new child care slots throughout the state. It’s an investment in our workforce, our economy, and the well-being of children and families.”

Feb. 6, 2025: “Affordable child care is essential for a thriving economy – it removes barriers for parents entering the workforce and makes life easier for families. I just announced new grants that will create 1,400 new child care slots across the state.”
