FAILED PRIORITIES: As fire victims continue to suffer, Pelosi is raising fast cash for… redistricting

Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, 85, is spearheading Democrats’ push for new gerrymandered districts in California, even as fire victims struggle to rebuild.

The New York Times describes her as a behind-the-scenes force for Gov. Gavin Newsom, offering guidance and even passing him her phone to secure donations from top party donors. And yet, neither Pelosi nor Newsom has shown the same urgency in fundraising for California’s tens of thousands of fire victims, many of whom may have to sell their land rather than rebuild due to lack of funds.

The New York Times further reported that Pelosi would open fundraising calls with pleasantries before handing the phone to Newsom to seal donations — a tactic shaped by federal fundraising rules and deference to him. Over the summer, Newsom sought her counsel before advancing Proposition 50, while Pelosi also advised Eric Holder as he abandoned nonpartisan mapmaking and guided California lawmakers facing redrawn districts. Her early endorsement helped rally support in Sacramento and Washington.

A longtime Democratic fundraiser, Pelosi is now viewed as central to financing a ballot campaign that could top $200 million, already urging top donors to mobilize their networks with unusual urgency.

By contrast, the FireAid concert brought in $100 million, but only a small share reached the fire victims themselves. Additionally, many victims report ongoing mental health problems—trauma, anxiety, depression—as they struggle with displacement, loss of homes, and uncertain futures.

A large number lack clear information or access to assistance, including healthcare support, rebuilding funds, and resources for long-term recovery. Entire neighborhoods were destroyed (tens of thousands of structures), leaving many without housing or basic infrastructure for months; some residents have little choice but to relocate.
