1) California Republican lawmaker reacts to ‘crazy’ bill that would give undocumented first-time homebuyers money

From Fox News: California Democrats are “crazy” for passing a progressive legislature that would give illegal immigrants up to $150,000 in first-time homeownership, officials said.

The bill, AB 1840, would require the California Housing Finance Authority’s home purchase assistance program, or California Dream for All Program, to include illegal immigrants’ applications. The bill cleared the state Senate on Tuesday.

In a statement to Fox News Digital, California Assembly Republican Leader James Gallagher of Yuba City argued that the legislation would exacerbate the border crisis, the housing crisis and the high cost of living in the Golden State.

“I didn’t know it was possible to make the border crisis and the housing crisis worse with just one vote, but Democrats found a way,” Gallagher said. “Giving taxpayer-funded housing subsidies to illegal immigrants will drive costs even higher and encourage more chaos at the border.”

“This is crazy, and it needs to stop,” he said.

2) Pro-Palestinian Students Take Over U. Michigan Student Gov‘t, Suspend Funds to Groups Until Divestment

From Breitbart: Pro-Palestinian students have assumed control of student government at the University of Michigan with the return to fall classes, suspending funding for student groups until the administration agrees to divest from, and boycott, Israel. The New York Times reported Tuesday:

At the University of Michigan, many student activities are usually funded or subsidized by the Central Student Government, known as C.S.G., an elected undergraduate and graduate council that decides how to dole out roughly $1.3 million annually to about 400 groups.

But last spring, pro-Palestinian activists, running under the Shut It Down party, won control over the student government. They immediately moved to withhold funding for all activities, until the university committed to divest from companies that profit from Israel’s war in Gaza.

Some of the almost two dozen groups that endorsed Shut It Down were also at risk of losing funding, including Students Organize for Syria, the Muslim Students Association and United Students Against Sweatshops.

3) Former Dem Politician Found Guilty Of Murdering Longtime Vegas Reporter

From Daily Wire: A former Democrat Clark County, Nevada, public administrator was found guilty on Wednesday of murdering longtime Las Vegas Review-Journal reporter Jeff German in September of 2022.

After three days of deliberation, the jury returned a guilty verdict in the trial of 47-year-old Robert Telles, who is now convicted of stabbing German to death after the reporter wrote about scandals within Telles’ office before he lost a primary election in June 2022, CNN reported. German had spent years covering the corruption within Las Vegas politics, but the story that ultimately led to his murder focused on a little-known public office, prosecutors said.

German, who had spent 40 years in journalism, reported in May 2022 that multiple employees who worked with Telles alleged that he created a “hostile work environment.” German’s report also claimed that Telles had an “inappropriate” relationship with a staffer. Telles finished in third place in his 2022 primary election and partly blamed German’s reporting.

4) ‘Dolton Dictator’ Tiffany Henyard’s former assistant, town trustee betrays her over ‘unethical, predatory behavior’ amid accusations of lavish spending

From New York Post: Embattled “Dolton Dictator” Mayor Tiffany Henyard received a major blow Monday from a presumed ally in her ongoing fight against fraud accusations following reports of lavish spending while in office.

Thornton Township Board Trustee Carmen Carlisle accused the 41-year-old self-proclaimed “supermayor” of “unethical and predatory behavior” to “increase her influence” in the community.

“Today, I am breaking my silence and speaking out against Thornton Township Supervisor and Mayor of Dolton Tiffany Henyard, who I believe has engaged in unethical and predatory behavior throughout her tenure,” Carlisle wrote to WGN.

“For the past two years, Henyard has manipulated employees, vendors, and residents, using her position to increase her influence, all while projecting a false image of success, funded by the hardworking taxpayers of Thornton Township and the Village of Dolton,” Carlisle said.

5) Grocery chain joins Walmart, CVS, others in ending cigarettes sales

From Fox Business: If you want to buy a pack of cigarettes, you won’t find them at Stop & Shop. The grocer announced this week that it plans to stop selling cigarettes and tobacco products at all of its 360 stores across the Northeast by Aug. 31 “as a part of the brand’s commitment to community wellness.”

“From our team of registered dietitians that serve our customers at no cost to our trained and trusted pharmacy associates, Stop & Shop aims to support the health and well-being of the neighborhoods we serve — and this exit from tobacco is one more way we’re accomplishing that goal,” Stop & Shop President Gordon Reid said in a statement.

American Cancer Society CEO Karen Knudsen said this move marks “a step in the right direction toward ending Big Tobacco’s influence on kids,” though she said there is even more that “can be done to reduce the toll of tobacco in our communities.” The organization is urging state lawmakers to prioritize tobacco control program funding so more people can get the resources they need if they want to quit.
