Vice President J.D. Vance, Senator Bernie Moreno, Governor Mike DeWine, EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin, and Senator Jon Husted will visit East Palestine on Monday to mark two years since the train derailment.
“I couldn’t be prouder to visit East Palestine with Vice President Vance and I look forward to working hand-in-hand with the Trump administration to ensure the Ohio residents whose lives were upended two years ago will have the support they need,” Moreno said in a statement.
East Palestine Mayor Trent Conaway spoke about the village’s recent multi-million dollar settlement with Norfolk Southern. The settlement amounts to $22 million from Norfolk Southern, aimed at resolving all claims the village had against the company due to the derailment and subsequent chemical release. This is in addition to previous payments totaling $13.5 million, which included funds for replacing emergency equipment, improving the village’s water treatment plant, and renovating the historic East Palestine train depot.
Mayor Conaway expressed hope that the $22 million would be directed toward infrastructure, economic development, and community projects. Residents worry the money may fail to address individual needs or provide compensation for personal losses from the disaster.
Here is a flashback video of Vance visiting East Palestine in 2023 after the derailment:
Visited a local creek in East Palestine today. These waterways are still very polluted. It’s time for Norfolk Southern to finish the cleanup. Check this video out: pic.twitter.com/4lsHBmrMJj
