Some disturbing information has surfaced involving Alex Pretti, the Minneapolis man who was shot by Border Patrol during a scuffle on January 24.
Pretti, 37, had already been harassing and protesting against federal immigration operations for days prior to the shooting, including cursing and spitting at them, and kicking out a taillight on the federal agents’ vehicle. On the day he was shot, he tried to prevent the agents from apprehending a woman, then appeared to reach for his gun, prompting the agents to shoot in self-defense.
Democrats voiced their outrage over the incident, touting that Pretti was a nurse and an upstanding citizen of the community. He had been a registered nurse in Minnesota since 2021, and at the time of his death, he was working as an intensive care nurse at the United States Department of Veterans Affairs hospital in Minneapolis.
On Thursday of this week, the Oversight Project, which started as an investigative branch of the Heritage Foundation, released a copy of a memo that indicates concerns had been raised just two days prior to Pretti’s death about his potential involvement in the appalling way a veteran patient had been treated.
The Oversight Project wrote, “In his final days, Pretti caused significant alarm at a VA hospital in MN. He was the assigned nurse for a patient who was dumped outside in just a gown during extreme cold. Despicable treatment for a veteran.”
The Oversight Project then shared a copy of an email dated Thursday, January 22, titled, “Discharge issue.” The email appears to be internal communications within the VA, as someone is reporting the incident and voicing their concerns. It reads:
“I wanted to make you aware of an issue we encountered today with a discharge for _____. He was discharged from SICU, in a wheelchair with a pole (we have sent countless reminders on this), dressed in only a gown with his clothes in a patient belongings bag. We are extremely concerned with the fact that the care team chose not to dress him considering the severe temperatures outside. It is currently 6 degrees with wind chill making it feel like -13.
“Additionally, there was a staff from SICU, a man whose name I was not given, who when questioned about the patient’s state of dress, sarcastically replied, “What, you want me to change him right here?!” I was away for most of the exchange but came upon the situation as ____ and the driver were leaving. 4 of our staff from VTS were present for this exchange and noted the gentleman from SICUs rude behavior.
“There are two nurses on the chart, Alex Pretti and _____. I would appreciate if ____ could please work with them to see if one of them were the one who brought Mr. ____ down or if they know who did. I would also like to request that if a patient has clothing, that they be dressed in them rather than bagged.”

NOTE: The post does not provide any additional details, as to whether Pretti was actually the person who discharged the veteran in freezing cold weather dressed only in a hospital gown, or whether it was someone else.
However, the email does say Pretti was one of the two nurses on the chart as being responsible for the veteran.
Another X user clarified, “Not sure you understand the significance of this. SICU means Surgical Intensive Care Unit. He dumped someone that was either post surgery in an ICU or someone else very sick onto the street.”
