From Fox News: Sen. Josh Hawley, R-Mo., launched an investigation into a left-wing group in California that he says may be financially supporting violent protests in Los Angeles.
Hawley wrote a letter to the Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights (CHIRLA) on Wednesday, saying the organization may have an “alleged role in financially and materially supporting” protests and riots in Los Angeles, which he described as “coordinated.”
“Who is funding the LA riots? This violence isn’t spontaneous. As chairman of the Judiciary Subcommittee on Crime & Terrorism, I’m launching an investigation to find out,” Hawley announced on social media.
The letter, addressed to CHIRLA Executive Director Angelica Salas, notes that “credible reporting” has indicated that the organization has provided “logistical support and financial resources to individuals engaged in these disruptive actions.”
CHIRLA is also the group responsible for creating the so-called Rapid Response Network, which is a hotline where people can call to report ICE raids in their area. The network then sends text alerts to those in the area, giving illegal aliens a chance to hide before ICE agents can find them.
The report explains that, based on IRS records, CHIRLA has received $34 million in government grants, including three from the Biden administration for $750,000.
Although President Donald Trump has now cut federal funding for the group, CHIRLA is still raking in money from state and city grants to pay its lawyers fighting against deportations.
In his letter, Hawley is demanding a list of data be preserved and turned over, starting November 5, 1994 through the current date.

Meanwhile, RedState editor Jennifer Van Laar posted a thread on X with details on some of those who are allegedly playing a role in the violent rioting:
So, we’ve talked about CHIRLA and its part in what’s happening in Los Angeles. Just like the org itself, CHIRLA Exec Dir Angelica Salas has her tentacles everywhere. Grab snacks, pull up a chair, and let’s go through it. 🧵
On Friday Salas was flanked by four LA City Council members, a CA State Assemblymember, a CA State Senator, and more. Her connections with Karen Bass go back decades. But she’s not just a bigshot in LA.
In 2023, right at the time CHIRLA’s state funding ballooned, Gavin Newsom appointed Salas to the newly-formed CA Racial Equity Commission, a state government entity. What a coincidence.
Salas is also on the board of the CA Wellness Foundation, an org started in 1992 when HealthNet, then the state’s largest insurer, converted from nonprofit to for-profit status. CA Wellness Foundation has morphed from its original mission to become a social justice and advocacy group. Here’s what was said in 1991 about how the group would be formed:
“The foundation will be governed by a board of seven trustees, who all have medical or professional health-care backgrounds. The board will disperse its funds through a grant process to community health care centers and other health-related organizations that focus on illness prevention, children’s health care and prenatal care.”
And now? There are 14 board members, many of whom have zero background in medicine or professional health-care, and grants to community health care centers focusing on illness prevention, children’s health care and prenatal care are only a portion of the millions they hand out every year – so basically, another layer of funding for agitators.

And then we have Unite-LA, a public/private partnership for which Salas is a board member/board secretary. That group claims its mission is to “break through traditional silos to re-focus and re-imagine our education systems to put students first and achieve improved outcomes for Los Angeles’ underserved students.” Putting students first – what a novel concept. But what the org does is more of the same – indoctrinating students and creating malleable Marxist foot soldiers.
Next, Salas is a “Liberation Fund Advisor” with Groundswell, another nonprofit (with both c3 and c4 arms). Their mission:
“Groundswell Fund strengthens U.S. movements for reproductive and social justice by resourcing intersectional grassroots organizing and centering the leadership of women of color – particularly those who are Black, Indigenous, and transgender.”
So, more funding for uprisings.

Salas also serves on the Board of Directors of Los Angeles Alliance for a New Economy, essentially a front for organized labor. They work with IBEW Local 18, UTLA (LA teachers’ union), UFCW 770, UNITE HERE local 11, SEIU-USWW.
Salas is the Chair of PowerCA Action, which used to be Mobilize the Immigrant Vote Action Fund. The group says they’ve registered and pre-registered over 100,000 voters.

And Salas’ husband, Mayron Payes, is part of the grift too. He’s a “training director” at Center for Community Change and a board member at CHIRLA Action Fund, the political arm of his wife’s nonprofit. Conflict of interest much?
Salas’ salary from CHIRLA was $201,000 in 2023. I haven’t done all of the digging yet to see how much she’s paid for all of these board positions, but $201k isn’t a lot in LA so I’d be shocked if she doesn’t have other large streams of income.
