From The Hill: Rep. Robert Garcia (D-Calif.), slammed Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) on Monday, saying the agency “cannot exist” and “needs to be abolished” after tensions between the Trump administration and local leaders in Minnesota escalated following the fatal shooting of Alex Pretti.
“As you probably know and folks should know, ICE and the [Department of Homeland Security], the way it exists today did not exist just a few decades ago,” Garcia told “Katy Tur Reports” on MS NOW. “The creation of the last few years of overreach, and certainly [the] ICE of right now is an agency created by Donald Trump that is larger and with more resources than at any time in American history.”
“But ICE in its current form cannot exist, because what they’re doing right now is they’re killing people in the street, they’re violating due process. And [DHS Secretary] Kristi Noem has to be held accountable for that,” he said later in the interview. “And people need to understand that this is a moment we have to have courage and stand up as a country and do the right thing.”
The California Democrat suggested that the duties handled by DHS and ICE could be transferred to other agencies, but claimed the latter has gone “completely rogue.”
“ICE needs to be abolished,” Garcia claimed. “It cannot be reformed. And Kristi Noem must be impeached. And as the Senate is considering funding, whether it’s not just DHS but other programs, they have to negotiate and make demands.”
Garcia urged Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) and other Democratic lawmakers to use the federal immigration crackdown in Minnesota — where two U.S. citizens have been killed during ICE and Border Patrol operations — as leverage to unmask agents and withdraw federal officers from the state and nationwide. He also said Democrats should “absolutely” keep the option of a partial government shutdown “on the table if we can use it as a way to ensure that we stop killing American citizens on our streets across this country.”
“So we have to use every single lever that we have to ensure that this stops and ends,” Garcia told host Katy Tur. “Donald Trump is creating his own militarized national police force with ICE. That’s exactly what he’s doing. That’s only accountable to him. So, Democrats have to be forceful in this moment.”
