California Gov. Gavin is claiming that he got booted from speaking at an event at the World Economic Forum in Davos, and is blaming the Trump administration.
According to a report by Politico, Newsom flew to Davos to try to sell himself as an alternative to President Trump. Now he’s fuming that his plan didn’t work.
From Politico: Newsom had been invited to speak on Wednesday at an event sponsored by USA House, which for the first time was recognized by the U.S. government as the country’s official headquarters at Davos. But an organizer told his office that they had opted to not include any U.S. officials in the talk focused on CEOs and other business leaders.
In a private exchange of messages obtained by POLITICO, a Newsom administration official accused the USA House of bowing to political pressure from the State Department — an accusation the organizer denied, while emphasizing the governor was still welcome in the venue — in a microcosm of the larger geopolitical tensions on display.
The back-and-forth reflected the political sparring match playing out at the gathering of the world’s elite. Newsom, the Democratic governor of California and a likely 2028 presidential contender, attended to trumpet California as an alternative to the vision laid out by Trump officials who also gathered in Switzerland.
Politico further noted that Newsom had “planned to use the gathering to excoriate what he casts as the Trump administration’s abuses of power, framing California — and implicitly himself — as a better partner to European allies who are reeling from Trump’s effort to claim Greenland. He challenged European counterparts this week to confront Trump, calling the president “pathetic.””
Newsom’s press office raged on X, “BREAKING: Under pressure from the White House and State Department, USA House (a church acting as the official US pavilion) is now denying entry to @CAGovernor Gavin Newsom to speak with media after Fortune — the official media partner — invited him to speak.”

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent literally TORCHED Newsom during a speech at Davos earlier on Wednesday, saying, “I think it’s very, very ironic that Newsom — who strikes me as Patrick Bateman meets Sparkle Beach Ben — may be the only Californian who knows less about economics than Kamala Harris. He’s here this week with his billionaire sugar daddy, Alex Soros.”
The fiery roasting continued, as Bessent slammed Newsom for his past actions of living it up during the Covid pandemic while he had put California residents all on lockdown. He warned Newsom that the Trump administration will be cracking down on waste, fraud and abuse in California.
“I’m told he was asked to give a speech on his signature policies, but he’s not speaking,” Bessent continued.
He noted that the poor folks in the Palisades had their homes burned down, while Newsom is there hobnobbing with the global elite.

Newsom was in the audience when Trump delivered his speech to the WEF Wednesday morning. Trump roasted the Democrat governor as well, saying, “I used to get along great with Gavin when I was president,” [referring to his first term in office.]
Newsom mockingly posted the video and indicated he thinks he is living “rent free” in Trump’s head.
But the joke was on Newsom, as his plan to try to sell himself over Trump appears to have flopped.

“California was just denied at the USA House. Last we checked, California is part of USA,” Newsom fumed in a post on X.
