President Donald J. Trump said Sunday that he has appointed Mark Savaya as special envoy to Iraq.

“I’m pleased to announce Mark Savaya will serve as Special Envoy to the Republic of Iraq,” Trump wrote.

“Mark’s deep understanding of the Iraq-U.S. relationship, and his connections in the region, will help advance the interests of the American people,” he continued. “Mark was a key player in my campaign in Michigan, where he, and others, helped secure a record vote with Muslim Americans. Congratulations, Mark!”

Fox News Digital reports that Savaya is a Detroit-area entrepreneur [..] who helped boost Muslim American turnout for his campaign […] underscoring the administration’s outreach to Middle Eastern communities in key swing states.”

Savaya founded Leaf and Bud, a Detroit-area marijuana dispensary. According to New York Times, Leaf and Bud sparked a community outcry over its aggressive billboard marketing campaign. He had between 50 and 100 in June of 2024, according to Fox2Detroit.

Savaya is apparently close with Trump and his administration. He has been pictured with Trump many times, and with other members of the Trump team and family.
