Following the assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump in Butler, Pennsylvania, on July 13, the Secret Service has issued a new code name for vice presidential candidate Sen. JD Vance.
The Republican senator from Ohio, who is Trump’s running mate for the 2024 election, now goes by the code name “Bobcat,” according to a report from the Daily Mail, which cited a friend of Vance’s.
Secret Service code names are assigned to presidents, vice presidents, first ladies, and other high-profile individuals under their protection.
While these names originally served a covert purpose, they are now largely ceremonial due to encrypted technology. However, they still facilitate quick and clear communication in fast, high-pressure situations.
Vance has been assigned the code name “Bobcat” by Secret Service.
