ESPN released a report Saturday claiming that President Trump is advocating for the new $3.7 billion Washington Commanders stadium to bear his name.
“It’s what the president wants, and it will probably happen,” one source said in the report.
Although the White House did not confirm the report, press secretary Karoline Leavitt remarked that the name “has a nice ring to it.”
“That would surely be a beautiful name, as it was President Trump who made the rebuilding of the new stadium possible,” Leavitt said in a statement to The Hill.
President Trump is set to attend the Commanders–Lions game as a guest of team owner Josh Harris, where they’ll reportedly discuss the stadium’s name, according to ESPN.
“The team doesn’t have the authority. They can’t name the stadium … on their own,” one of the sources said. “The city would be involved in that decision, and the Park Service would be involved.”
The Commanders plan to build their new stadium on the site of the old Robert F. Kennedy Stadium, located on federal land in Washington’s Anacostia neighborhood. Although managed by the National Park Service, Congress transferred control of the site’s redevelopment to D.C. leaders last year. In September, the D.C. Council voted 11-2 to approve the NFL team’s return to the capital after 28 years in Landover, Maryland.
House Republicans pushed to fast-track the stadium’s redevelopment. They introduced a bill requiring a 60-day congressional review of all D.C. Council legislation, while blocking the council from reintroducing measures previously rejected by Congress.
