In Canada, pressure is mounting within the Liberal Party and its parliamentary caucus for Justin Trudeau to resign as Prime Minister following the loss of a previously safe seat to the opposition Conservatives. The defeat in the June 24 Toronto-St. Paul’s by-election highlighted a significant decline in support for Trudeau’s minority government, which has been evident in polls for over a year.
Trudeau’s leadership has been criticized both internationally and domestically and is responsible for a failed strategy supported by his allies in the trade unions and the New Democratic Party (NDP). The Liberals had held Toronto-St. Paul’s for ten federal elections since 1993, including during their worst-ever performance in 2011. However, the Conservatives managed to overturn a substantial gap from 2021 to win a seat in Metro Toronto for the first time since 2011.
Trudeau, who has been Prime Minister since November 2015, has led a minority government reliant on the NDP for support since 2019. In March 2022, the NDP, with the backing of trade unions, entered a formal alliance with the Liberals to ensure the government’s stability until June 2025.
