Sen. JD Vance admitted feeling nervous ahead of Tuesday night’s debate with Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz.

However, while Walz appeared shaky on stage, Vance was praised for his calm and polite demeanor, leading many to view him as the clear winner. Vance credited his strong performance to a pre-debate pep talk from a friend.

“A priest friend sent me this prayer before I went on stage,” added Vance, who is a convert to Catholicism. “I share it in the hopes someone will find it as meaningful as I did.”

Vance shared a prayer attributed to Thomas Aquinas, the renowned Italian priest, scholar, and Catholic saint recognized for his profound influence on Western philosophy and theology. The prayer reads as follows:

“O Ineffable Creator. Refine my speech and pour forth upon my lips the goodness of Your blessing. Grant to me keenness of mind, capacity to remember, skill in learning, subtlety to interpret, and eloquence in speech. May You guide the beginning of my work, direct its progress, and bring it to completion.”

Vance’s Catholic faith seems to have influenced his running mate, former President Donald Trump. Over the weekend, Trump shared the Prayer to Saint Michael the Archangel on the saint’s feast day. The prayer, written by Pope Leo XIII in the 1800s, is often invoked by Christians for strength during difficult times. Trump’s promotion of the prayer took many by surprise and sparked controversy, notably angering former Labor Secretary Robert Reich.

“Trump increasingly suggests that he is God’s chosen instrument of wrath and that his opponents are ‘evil spirits’ to be ‘cast into hell,’” tweeted Reich. “If you don’t find this terrifying, you’re not paying attention.”
