California Governor Gavin Newsom has sharply criticized President Donald Trump’s trade policies, labeling them as “quixotic” and “chaotic.”

In a recent interview on Fox Business’s “Kudlow,” Newsom argued that Trump’s tariff strategies have created economic instability, particularly affecting California’s economy. He emphasized that the inconsistent approach to trade has led to decreased investment and consumer confidence, impacting various sectors, including agriculture, technology, and small businesses.

Newsom mentioned the tangible effects of the tariffs on California’s workforce, noting that dock workers, truckers, and small business owners are experiencing economic pressure. He described the situation as “recklessness,” warning that the damages inflicted by these trade policies cannot be quickly or easily reversed.

In response to Trump’s proposed 100% tariff on foreign-made films, Newsom extended an invitation to collaborate on revitalizing the American film industry. He proposed a federal partnership to “Make America Film Again,” aiming to support domestic production and bring more jobs to California.

Furthermore, Newsom has taken legal action against the Trump administration’s tariffs, filing a lawsuit that challenges the legality of the imposed trade measures. The suit argues that the tariffs exceed presidential authority and cause severe economic harm to California, particularly in sectors reliant on international trade. Newsom’s administration contends that such tariff decisions should involve congressional approval.

As trade negotiations between the U.S. and China continue, Newsom remains skeptical about the effectiveness of Trump’s strategies. He advocates for a more measured, worker-centered industrial policy to address global trade imbalances, emphasizing the need for stability and predictability in economic decision-making.
