From the Washington Examiner: Pat Soon-Shiong, the owner of the Los Angeles Times, shared on Monday that he believed his paper’s endorsement of Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass during the 2022 mayoral campaign was “a mistake.”

“So, at the L.A. Times, we endorsed Karen Bass. I think, right now, upfront, that’s a mistake, and we admit that,” Soon-Shiong said. “So, I thought it was very important early on for me to come out.”

“And I think we were one of the few to say competence matters,” he continued while appearing on the online show The Morning Meeting.

“Maybe we should think about how we elect people on the basis of did they actually run a job? Did they actually make a payroll? Do they understand what it is?” he said in the interview.

“Rather than having professional politicians whose only job is to run for office… not trying to be disparaging but I think we are at the stage now in this nation and in the world… that you really need people who understand how it affects a man in the street. You know, how it affects the working type of person,” he said.

“I think President Trump, in this election, has truly understood that,” he said, again noting that “competency matters.”

Last Thursday, January 9, Soon-Shiong said in a social media post, “Maybe the lesson we learned out of this catastrophe in California is to now vote not based on left or right or D versus R but perhaps based on competent or no experience in operating a job !! We have to elect based on competence…yes competence matters.”

In another post, Soon-Shiong called out Venture capitalist Ben Horowitz for having made a ‘significant donation’ to Kamala Harris’ presidential campaign last fall.

“Is this you, @pmarca? Are you hedging your endorsements? But you’re not the only one who makes mistakes. I’ve made some—like endorsing Karen Bass. And that’s a big reason we didn’t endorse Kamala. I don’t have the luxury of a hedge. Now is the time for leadership, and I’ll welcome you to join our editorial board to be a part of the solution. I hope you will,” he wrote.
