1) Jill Biden recalls her husband’s choice to bow out of 2024 race at DNC

From Washington Examiner: First lady Jill Biden delivered a roughly five-minute speech Monday at the Democratic National Convention that highlighted President Joe Biden’s humanity while propping up Vice President Kamala Harris.

Jill Biden, who walked onstage to Fatboy Slim’s 1999 smash “Praise You,” opened her remarks by reminiscing about some of her favorite memories alongside the president.

“Those look when I’m reminded of all, he’s accomplished in the name of something bigger than himself, receiving the Medal of Freedom, with humility,” she stated. “Placing his hand on our family bible to take his oath of office, and three weeks ago, when I saw him dig deep into his soul and decide to no longer seek reelection and endorse Kamala Harris.”

The first lady noted that the family’s connection to Harris began when their late son, Beau Biden, worked with Harris when he was Delaware’s attorney general.

“He told me at the dinner table one night, ‘Mom, she’s special, someone to keep your eye on,” Jill Biden declared. “And he was right. Joe and I know Kamala. We have seen her courage, her determination, and her leadership up close. Kamala and Tim, you will win.”

 

2) Raskin Tells DNC Republicans Could Try to ‘Kill’ JD Vance

From Breitbart: Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-MD) told the Democratic National Convention in Chicago, Illinois, on Monday night that Republicans could try to “kill” Sen. JD Vance.

Raskin was referring to the hostility expressed by a small group of rioters on January 6, 2021, who brought a mock guillotine to the Capitol and were said to be searching for Vice President Mike Pence to punish him for not rejecting the congressional certification of the Electoral College vote.

The speech was bitter, and vindictive — as much of Raskin’s rhetoric has been about Trump, even before he took office.

4) Birth Control Activists Erect 20-Foot Inflatable IUD near DNC

From Breitbart: Besides protesters dressed as abortion pills, and a Planned Parenthood “health” mobile doling out free vasectomies and abortions, a 20-foot tall inflatable intrauterine device (IUD) is visible near the Democratic National Convention (DNC) this week.

A birth control activism group called Americans for Contraception has the inflatable object — named Freeda Womb — on display at 2226 W Walnut St. in Chicago from Monday to Thursday, 3 p.m. to 10 p.m.

 

5) Unearthed footage of Crooks at Trump rally

From Collin Rugg via X: Newly uncovered footage appears to show would-be Trump assas*in Thomas Crooks spending his last hours on Earth walking around the Butler, PA rally location. It appears that the original video came from a small business owner who was selling patriotic hats before the rally. When they went back through their footage, they made the discovery.

“Looking back at my videos from the PA Butler Trump rally… we were there just trying to sell our patriotic hats…”

7) Parvovirus or ‘slapped cheek disease’ is on the rise, CDC warns

From Fox News: A respiratory disease known as parvovirus B19 is on the rise in the U.S. among all age groups, according to a recent advisory from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

The CDC issued the health alert on Aug. 13 after European public health authorities reported “unusually” high numbers of cases in 14 countries during the first quarter of 2024, the advisory said.

The virus typically causes a blotchy rash on the cheeks that appears as if someone has slapped them — hence its nickname, “slapped cheek disease.”

“Parvovirus can be a very mild infection in many people, but if you are pregnant or are immunocompromised in any way, you are at a much greater risk of serious illness,” Dr. Aaron Glatt, chief of infectious diseases at Mount Sinai South Nassau Hospital on Long Island, New York, told Fox News Digital.

 

8) Disney Cancels Woke ‘Star Wars’ Series ‘The Acolyte’ Season 2

From Daily Wire: Disney+ has reportedly canceled the “Star Wars” series “Acolyte” created by showrunner Leslye Headland — who promised it would be infused with LGBTQ themes — after only one season amid low ratings.

Lucasfilm has opted out of having a second season for the female-centric, Sith-focused series, sources told Deadline.  The eight-part series launched on June 4 after scoring numerous glowing headlines that helped it land a strong opening with 4.8 million views in its first day on the streamer with its first two episodes.

However, it struggled with luke-warm reviews and poor ratings, falling out of the top 10 by the third week, the outlet noted. The series remained there until the finale, when it finally cracked into the 10th spot, with 335 million minutes, something that is believed to be the lowest ever for a “Star Wars” series finale, the outlet noted.

 

9) US vacationers are pulling back

From Fox Business: The travel industry is warning that U.S. consumers are pulling back on their excursions.

“The desire to travel is ingrained in humans, but financially there are signs that the consumer might not be able to endure the amount of travel they would like,” Morningstar equity analyst Dan Wasiolek told FOX Business.

Earlier this month, Hilton CEO Chris Nassetta told analysts during an earnings call that the money consumers saved up during the COVID-19 pandemic had been depleted.

“They’ve spent all that money. They’re now borrowing more. And so, they have less available, less disposable income and capacity to do anything, including travel,” Nassetta said. However, this isn’t a problem with the “upper echelons” of its customer base, he noted.

 

10) Youth Unemployment in China Rises to 17.1%, Highest Level This Year

From Breitbart: China’s National Bureau of Statistics on Friday released economic data that showed youth unemployment rose to 17.1 percent in July, an increase from 13.2 percent in June and the highest level recorded in 2024 so far.

Voice of America News (VOA) noted the real numbers are probably even worse. Unemployment reports in China are dodgy even by the usual standards of the Communist regime because when youth unemployment hit 21.3 percent in June 2023, the government stopped reporting jobless numbers altogether.

Six months later, the Chinese National Bureau of Statistics reluctantly began publishing unemployment figures again — but now the books were blatantly cooked to exclude students entirely. China’s unemployment reports also exclude rural areas, where joblessness is much higher — often twice the rate reported in big cities.
