Eleven inmates escaped from the Orleans Parish Justice Center in New Orleans on Friday.
The escape was discovered during an 8:30 a.m. headcount, though it is believed the inmates may have fled as early as midnight. Authorities have warned that the escapees are considered armed and dangerous.
One inmate, Kendell Myles, was apprehended later that day in the French Quarter, leaving ten still at large. The escapees range in age from 19 to 42 and include individuals charged with serious offenses. Among them is Derrick Groves, convicted of second-degree murder for a 2018 Mardi Gras shooting, and Corey Boyd, facing a second-degree murder charge. Other escapees face charges including attempted murder, armed robbery, and domestic abuse.
Investigators believe the inmates escaped through a hole behind a toilet in one of the cells, leading into a maintenance corridor. This breach allowed them to access a loading dock and eventually climb over the jail wall and onto an interstate. Authorities are reviewing surveillance footage and investigating the removal of fixtures like sinks or toilets that may have facilitated the escape.
Orleans Parish Sheriff Susan Hutson announced a comprehensive investigation into the escape, focusing on staff conduct, security measures, and facility protocols. There are indications that the escape may have been assisted by individuals within the Sheriff’s Department. Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill criticized the delayed public notification, calling the situation “beyond unacceptable.”
A multi-agency manhunt is underway, involving local, state, and federal law enforcement, including the FBI and U.S. Marshals. Authorities have warned that anyone found aiding or harboring the escapees will face legal consequences. The public is urged to remain vigilant and report any information to 911.
