The race has been called in the battle for the next governor of the “blue state” of New Jersey, between Democrat candidate Mikie Sherrill and Republican candidate Jack Ciattarelli.

Decision Desk HQ, the New York Times and Fox News have all declared that Sherrill, 53, has won the race.

With 60% of the vote reported, Sherrill was leading with 57% of the vote, compared to only 42.4% for Ciattarelli.

This was Ciattarelli’s third run for governor of New Jersey. He came in second in the Republican gubernatorial primary in 2017, then won the GOP nomination in 2021 and came within 3 points of Gov. Phil Murphy (D-NJ) for the general election. President Trump came within 5 points of winning the blue state in the 2024 election.

Earlier this year, Sherrill became embroiled in a cheating scandal surrounding her U.S. Navy Academy graduation back in 1994.

Phil Murphy, the current Democrat governor of New Jersey, is in his second and final term, and was unable to run for a 3rd term.

The election results were a huge contrast to recent polling, which showed Sherrill with only a 1% lead.
