In what is being described as ‘Russia’s Pearl Harbor,’ Ukrainian military forces has left Russia stunned in a surprise attack on Sunday, reportedly wiping out an estimated one-third of Russia’s military bombers.
From the Associated Press: A Ukrainian drone attack has destroyed more than 40 Russian planes deep in Russia’s territory, Ukraine’s Security Service said on Sunday, while Moscow pounded Ukraine with missiles and drones just hours before a new round of direct peace talks in Istanbul.
A military official, who spoke with the Associated Press on condition of anonymity to disclose operational details, said the far-reaching attack took more than a year and a half to execute and was personally supervised by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
The military source said it was an “extremely complex” operation, involving the smuggling of first-person view, or FPV, drones to Russia, where they were then placed in mobile wooden houses.
“Later, drones were hidden under the roofs of these houses while already placed on trucks. At the right moment, the roofs of the houses were remotely opened, and the drones flew to hit Russian bombers,” the source said.
According to the source, the Ukrainian drones struck 41 planes stationed at four separate military airfields thousands of miles from Ukraine on Sunday afternoon, including A-50, Tu-95 and Tu-22M aircraft, which had been used to bomb Ukraine.
The Ukrainian military had codenamed the operation “Operation Spider’s Web,” said they had been planning the attack for about 18 months, and claimed they have destroyed 34% of Russia’s air missile fleet, with damages estimated at $7 billion.
“The attack came the same day as Zelenskyy said Ukraine will send a delegation to Istanbul for a new round of direct peace talks with Russia on Monday,” the AP reported.

A source told the Kyiv Independent that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky personally oversaw the operation.
In a post on X, Zelenskyy announced:
Head of the Security Service of Ukraine Vasyl Maliuk delivered a report regarding today’s operation. An absolutely brilliant result. A result achieved solely by Ukraine. One year, six months, and nine days from the start of planning to effective execution. Our most long-range operation.
Our people involved in preparing the operation were withdrawn from Russian territory in time. I thanked General Maliuk for this success of Ukraine. I instructed the Security Service of Ukraine to inform the public about the details and results of the operation that can be disclosed.
Of course, not everything can be revealed at this moment, but these are Ukrainian actions that will undoubtedly be in history books. Ukraine is defending itself, and rightly so – we are doing everything to make Russia feel the need to end this war. Russia started this war, Russia must end it. Glory to Ukraine!

Security expert Maria Avdeeva wrote, “This will be in textbooks. Ukraine secretly delivered FPV drones and wooden mobile cabins into Russia. The drones were hidden under the roofs of the cabins, which were later mounted on trucks.
“At the signal, the roofs opened remotely. Dozens of drones launched directly from the trucks, striking strategic bomber aircraft. And — Russia can’t produce these bombers anymore. The loss is massive. Nothing like this has ever been done before.”

U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham (R-SC) reacted to the attack, writing, “The ever-resourceful Ukraine used creative drone warfare tactics to successfully attack Russian bombers and military assets used to kill Ukrainian citizens and destroy their country.
“Russia indiscriminately kills men, women and children. It’s time for the world to act decisively against Russia’s aggression by holding China and others accountable for buying cheap Russian oil that props up Putin’s war machine. If you want this war to end, push China to help end it.”

As more details of today’s Ukrainian operation come to light, it must be an extra level of humiliation for the Kremlin that the drones used to destroy billions in Russian aircraft were actually built INSIDE Russia, in Chelyabinsk.
