According to a report by CNN published Sunday night, President-elect Donald Trump has offered the Republican Rep. Elise Stefanik of New York the position of U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations.
The report was based on two unidentified sources who were familiar with the situation. This comes after Reuters had earlier reported that Stefanik was being considered for the role.
Karoline Leavitt, a spokeswoman for Trump-Vance team, would not confirm or deny the report, but told Reuters in an email, “President-Elect Trump will begin making decisions on who will serve in his second Administration soon. Those decisions will be announced when they are made.”
Stefanik, 40, the House Republican Conference chair, is the fourth-ranking House Republican, and a staunch ally of Trump. She has served in the U.S. Congress since 2015.
The New York Post explained that if Stefanik accepts the position and leaves Congress, a special election would be held within 90 days to fill her seat.
Stefanik represents New York’s 21st congressional district in Upstate New York, which is a reliably conservative area. She just won re-election to the seat with 62% of the vote, so another Republican would be likely to win it if she should vacate the seat.
Late Sunday night, CNN’s Katilan Collins announced, “News — Trump has offered Elise Stefanik the job as U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, a source familiar tells CNN.”

Rep. Mike Lawler (R-NY) reacted to the news, writing, “Congratulations to @EliseStefanik who will take the @UN by storm, take on the anti-US and Israel bigotry, combat Jew hatred and hold adversaries to account. Elise will be a strong voice advancing US Foreign Policy and helping to reestablish America’s leading role in the world.”
