While speaking to reporters Wednesday afternoon, President Donald Trump appeared to confirm the rumors that FBI Deputy Director Dan Bongino may be planning to resign and return to civilian life.
Fox News had first reported on Monday is considering leaving the FBI.
More from CNBC on Wednesday: FBI Deputy Director Dan Bongino has said he plans to step down from his role early next year, MS NOW reported Wednesday, citing eight people briefed on his account.
Bongino, the No. 2 official at the FBI under Director Kash Patel, also told his confidants that he will not be returning to the bureau’s headquarters this month, those people said.
He has considered announcing his departure on Friday, four people told MS NOW.
Reporters asked President Trump about the rumors after he attended the dignified transfer at Dover Air Force Base, of two National Guard soldiers who were recently killed in Syria.
“Dan did a great job. I think he wants to go back to his show,” Trump said, without elaborating further.
Bongino gave up a highly successful podcast show in order to serve in the FBI.
