The honeymoon is definitely over. And the ‘marriage’ may be as well.

President Donald Trump has finally broken his silence after billionaire and former DOGE leader Elon Musk went rogue and started speaking out in fierce opposition to Trump’s spending legislation, dubbed the ‘Big Beautiful Bill,’ which has passed in the House and is currently being considered by the Senate.

Only six days ago, Musk joined Trump in the Oval Office for a press briefing, as he formally concluded his term with the Department of Government Efficiency, and the two were best buddies.

Just days later, Musk did a ‘180’ as he started blasting the legislation on social media and called for it to be trashed, saying the bill increases the deficit.  Musk had just devoted the past five months trying to CUT government spending, at great personal risk to himself and his Tesla business.

Wednesday afternoon, Musk took the gloves off completely, writing, “Call your Senator, Call your Congressman, Bankrupting America is NOT ok! KILL the BILL.”

While speaking to reporters in the Oval Office Thursday morning during a meeting with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, President Trump was asked about Elon Musk opposing the very bill he is trying to get passed.

“I’ve always liked Elon, and I was very surprised,” Trump said, adding, “He hasn’t said anything about me that’s bad. I’d rather have him criticize me than the bill because the bill is incredible.”

Trump said Musk had previously read the bill and approved it. “I’m very disappointed because Elon knew the inner workings of this bill,” he said, adding, “He never had a problem until right after he left.”

The president said, “Elon’s upset because we took the EV mandate tax credit away.”

“He knew everything about it. He had no problem with it. All of a sudden he had a problem, and he only developed the problem when he found out that we’re going to have to cut the EV mandate [tax credit], because that’s billions and billions of dollars, and it really is unfair,” Trump said.

Trump also noted that Musk wanted Jared Isaacman to serve as administrator of NASA. Trump recently pulled Isaacman’s nomination, and he said Thursday that one main reason was because Isaacman is a Democrat. He noted that Musk is upset Isaacman wasn’t chosen.

“Elon and I had a great relationship. I don’t know if we will anymore,” Trump lamented. “He hasn’t said bad about me personally, but I’m sure that’ll be next. But I’m very disappointed… I’ve helped Elon a lot.”

“He’s not the first. People leave my administration and they love us and then at some point they miss it so badly, and some of them embrace it and some of them actually become hostile. I don’t know what it is, it’s sort of Trump derangement syndrome, I guess they call it,” Trump continued. “The glamor is gone, the whole world is different, and they become hostile.”

ELON MUSK RESPONDS

While Trump was speaking in the Oval Office, Musk was responding on X in real time.

In response to Trump’s comments about the elimination of the electric vehicle tax credit, Musk wrote, “Whatever. Keep the EV/solar incentive cuts in the bill, even though no oil & gas subsidies are touched (very unfair!!), but ditch the MOUNTAIN of DISGUSTING PORK in the bill. In the entire history of civilization, there has never been legislation that both big and beautiful. Everyone knows this! Either you get a big and ugly bill or a slim and beautiful bill. Slim and beautiful is the way.”

Musk contradicted Trump’s claim that he had previously approved the massive spending bill.

“False, this bill was never shown to me even once and was passed in the dead of night so fast that almost no one in Congress could even read it!” he declared.

Trump noted that Musk had endorsed him and campaigned for him in Pennsylvania, although the president said, “I think I would’ve won Pennsylvania anyway.”

Musk fired back, “Without me, Trump would have lost the election, Dems would control the House and the Republicans would be 51-49 in the Senate. Such ingratitude.”

Musk has been bringing up some of President Trump’s old tweets.

On July 31, 2012, Trump wrote, “No member of Congress should be eligible for re-election if our country’s budget is not balanced—deficits not allowed!”

“I couldn’t agree more! 🇺🇸🇺🇸” Musk replied, posting the old tweet from 13 years ago.

On January 23, 2013 Trump wrote, “I cannot believe the Republicans are extending the debt ceiling—I am a Republican & I am embarrassed!”

“Wise words,” Musk quipped.

Commenting on another post someone else shared with many of Trump’s old Twitter posts, most back in 2011 and 2012, Musk asked, “Where is this guy today??”
