BREAKING: Trump appoints Republican governor as special envoy to Greenland

President Donald Trump made a surprise announcement on Truth Social Sunday night, saying he has appointed Louisiana Gov. Jeff Landry to serve as the U.S. Special Envoy to Greenland.

After winning the presidential election last year, Trump began pushing the proposal that the United States should buy Greenland, and idea that was soundly rejected by top officials in Greenland.

Landry, 54, has served as governor of Louisiana since January 2024. He is a Republican, and a strong supporter of President Trump.

Trump wrote in his announcement on Truth Social: “I am pleased to announce that I am appointing the GREAT Governor of Louisiana, Jeff Landry, as the United States Special Envoy to Greenland. Jeff understands how essential Greenland is to our National Security, and will strongly advance our Country’s Interests for the Safety, Security, and Survival of our Allies, and indeed, the World. Congratulations Jeff!”

Reuters noted that it is not yet clear whether Landry would need to step down from his gubernatorial role in order to take the position.

But Gov. Landry put the questions to rest, as he responded on X later Sunday night.

“Thank you @realDonaldTrump! It’s an honor to serve you in this volunteer position to make Greenland a part of the U.S. This in no way affects my position as Governor of Louisiana!” Landry wrote.
