In a press briefing in the Oval Office Tuesday morning, President Donald Trump announced a major deal with Pfizer to slash the costs of “countless” prescription drugs.
Trump was joined by Vice President JD Vance, Health and Human Services Sec. Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., FDA Commissioner Dr. Marty Makary, and Dr. Mehmet Oz, the administrator of the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services.
Also speaking at the press conference was Pfizer CEO Albert Bouria.

Trump said the agreement will save Americans hundreds of millions of dollars a year, and said the United States had been paying up to 10 times more for prescription drugs than other countries, and that is now ending.
“For many years, Americans have paid the highest prices anywhere in the world for prescription drugs… a major reason is that American consumers have been subsidizing Research and Development costs for the entire planet… it’s being changed as of today,” Trump said.

Trump further announced, “Pfizer will invest $70 billion to reshore domestic manufacturing facilities… and fund Research and Development right here in America. We’re working with other major pharmaceutical companies to secure similar agreements.”

Trump said Pfizer will make some of their most popular medications available to all Americans at heavily discounted prices of between 50%-100% off. Additionally, all new medications introduced to the U.S. market will be sold at the reduced Most Favored Nation cost.
“Pfizer is committing to offer all of their prescription medications to Medicaid and it will be at the Most Favored Nation prices. It’s going to have a huge impact on bringing Medicaid prices down,” Trump also announced.
“We’re going to finally deliver on the fair drug prices that President Trump has been speaking about for two terms. We’re going to celebrate this historic day—I predict… in the medical field, for generations to come,” Dr. Oz said.

Pfizer CEO Albert Bouria said, “The big winner of this deal clearly will be the American patient — there’s no doubt about it. They are the ones that will see significant impact in their ability to buy medicines… We are ready to UNLEASH our investment portfolio in this country.”

“Today marks the the beginning of the end of the great American rip off, and it also marks the beginning of the end of a great American tragedy; something I’ve seen as a physician at the bedside — patients getting spun up into a financial rage… to try to get enough money to pay for a drug… a drug that’s five or ten times more expensive than the same drug in France or Germany or the UK,” Dr. Makary said.

In one humorous moment during Trump’s remarks, Kennedy sneezed directly behind him. The president turned, said, “God bless you, Bobby,” then quipped, “I hope I didn’t catch Covid there… Give me a Paxlovid immediately!” The room erupted in laughter.

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said in a statement, “This is a consequential moment for our country. Drug prices WILL be lower for everyday Americans, thanks to the negotiating prowess and determination of President Donald J. Trump. Democrats have been wanting to do this for decades. The Trump Administration has delivered.”
“In July, President Trump sent powerful letters to pharmaceutical companies outlining the steps they needed to take to bring down the prices of prescription drugs. Today, Pfizer answered and agreed to lower prices for the American people. Presidential leadership on full display,” Leavitt added.
