Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau officially confirmed Monday morning that he intends to step down, both as the Liberal Party leader, and as Prime Minister, just as soon as a new leader can be elected.
In an ironic omen, just moments before he came outside to make his announcement, multiple sheets of paper from Trudeau’s prepared speech blew off the lectern onto the ground.
“I’ll wing it,” he quipped, coming out the door, as the papers went flying.

“I am a fighter,” Trudeau declared, insisting that he cares deeply about the country. “The fact is, despite best efforts to work through it, Parliament has been paralyzed for months,” he admitted.
“I intend to resign as party leader and as prime minister, after the party selects its next leader through a robust, nationwide, competitive process,” he said, adding, “This country deserves a real choice in the next election, and it has become clear to me that if I’m having to fight internal battles, I cannot be the best option in that election.”

Reactions to Trudeau’s announcement are pouring in, both from Canadians and Americans.
While many are glad he’s leaving, others are declaring him a coward and noting that by resigning, he avoids facing a brutal defeat in the election.

Trudeau gets to walk away without any punishment for the myriad of scandals or answer for any of his wrongdoings besides the cratering of his political career and that of his party.
He and his party deserve more consequences than just leadership replacement.

Outrageous and anti-democratic.
He refuses to face either Parliament or the people of Canada.
He really is a coward. https://t.co/uToMSe6Yps
