From NBC News: The Supreme Court on Wednesday upheld a Tennessee law restricting gender transition care for minors, delivering a major blow to transgender rights.
The 6-3 ruling is likely to have a broad impact as 24 other states have already enacted laws similar to the one in Tennessee, which bars gender transition surgery, puberty blockers and hormone therapy for youth.
The court was divided on ideological lines, with the six conservatives in the majority and the three liberals in dissent.
Those laws now look set to survive similar legal challenges. The ruling does not affect states that do not have such bans, meaning care in those states will still be available.
The case was not challenging any ban on transgender surgeries for children, but was only challenging the ban against puberty blockers and hormones treatments that would facilitate a minor’s transition to different sex.
Chief Justice John Roberts authored the Court’s decision on the case, and said the Tennessee law does not constitute a form of sex discrimination that would violate the Constitution’s 14th Amendment.
Fox News wrote:
Justice Samuel Alito cited “hotly disputed” medical studies on the alleged benefits of such medical treatments. He also referred to other research from Great Britain and Sweden that reported on the negative consequences teens experienced after undergoing gender transition treatments.
Alito told the government’s attorney that those studies “found a complete lack of high-quality evidence showing that the benefits of the treatments in question here outweigh the risks.”
Liberal Justice Sonia Sotomayor fumed in her dissent, “By retreating from meaningful judicial review exactly where it matters most, the court abandons transgender children and their families to political whims.”
The 6-3 decision is from Chief Justice Roberts. Justice Sotomayor dissented, joined by Jackson. Justice Kagan also dissented. https://t.co/6AGLRyBJaS

Absolutely massive news: The Supreme Court just upheld Tennessee’s ban on sex changes, puberty blockers and hormones for kids.
We won. It’s now illegal to medically transition a child in Tennessee AND we set the precedent for the entire country. @LandonStarbuck and I fought really hard for this along with @WilliamLamberth @SenJohnson and @MattWalshBlog. All the work was worth it. Now other states can safely ban these barbaric practices too.
Thank you @AGTennessee for defending our bill and congratulations to everyone involved!

“The Supreme Court upholds our ban in Tennessee against gender transition procedures for minors. A huge victory. A fatal blow to the child mutilation industry. We won,” cheered Matt Walsh.
