President Donald Trump’s nominee for U.S. Attorney General, Pam Bondi, was confirmed by the Senate Tuesday evening, in a 54-46 vote.

Bondi, 59, is the former Attorney General for Florida, where she served for a full 8 years, from 2011 to 2019. She is also a longtime ally of President Trump.

Prior to becoming Florida’s attorney general, Bondi served as a prosecutor for 18 years with the Hillsborough County State Attorney’s Office in Florida.

Bondi is only the third woman to serve as U.S. Attorney General, and the first Republican woman to serve in the role. Loretta Lynch served as U.S. Attorney General from 2015 to 2017, and Janet Reno was in the role from 1993 to 2001.

Senator John Fetterman of Pennsylvania was the lone Democrat to cross the aisle and voted in favor of Bondi Tuesday night.

Earlier Tuesday afternoon, ahead of the vote, Senate Majority Leader John Thune spoke from the Senate floor, confirming his support for Bondi.

“The American people should be able to trust that the Department of Justice is not targeting Americans based on their political opinions or religious beliefs. Pam Bondi has promised to get the department back to its core mission: prosecuting crime and protecting Americans from threats to their safety and their freedoms. I look forward to confirming her later today,” Thune announced.
