BREAKING: Senate battle heats up, as Republican congresswoman launches primary campaign against GOP senator Bill Cassidy

It is now official.  Republican Rep. Julia Letlow of Louisiana has announced her campaign for U.S. Senate, in an attempt to take the seat currently occupied by Republican Sen. Bill Cassidy, who previously voted to impeach President Trump in January 2021, is also running for re-election.

Letlow, 44, first won her seat in the U.S. House in a special election in March 2021.  Her husband, Luke Letlow, had been elected to the seat in the November 2020 elections, but sadly contracted Covid and passed away in December before he could ever be sworn in.  He was only 41.  Julia then ran for her husband’s seat in the special election, and won with over 64% of the vote.  The couple had two small children together.

Letlow released her campaign video Tuesday morning, and announced, “Today, I am announcing my candidacy for the United States Senate to ensure the nation we leave our children is safer and stronger. Louisiana deserves a conservative Senator who will not waver. I am honored to have President Trump’s endorsement and trust. Let’s Geaux!”

Cassidy then announced on X, “Congresswoman Letlow called me this morning to say she was running. She said she respected me and that I had done a good job. I will continue to do a good job when I win re-election. I am a conservative who wakes up every morning thinking about how to make Louisiana and the United States a better place to live.”

Trump officials have reportedly been encouraging Letlow to run for Senate against Sen. Cassidy, and President Donald Trump released his full endorsement on Saturday, saying if she runs, she has his support.

Political explained earlier this week:

Cassidy is seeking his third term in the Senate. He has drawn criticism from Trump at times, particularly over his 2021 vote to impeach Trump over the Jan. 6 Capitol riot. But Cassidy has touted his working relationship with Trump over the past year, including supporting Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s nomination to lead HHS and vowing last week to help enact part of Trump’s health care framework.

Trump wrote in his endorsement:

Highly Respected America First Congresswoman, Julia Letlow, of the wonderful State of Louisiana, is a Great Star, has been from the very beginning, and only gets better! I am hearing that Julia is considering launching her Campaign for the United States Senate in Louisiana, a place I love and WON BIG, six times, including Primaries, in 2016, 2020, and 2024!

I know Julia well, have seen her tested at the highest and most difficult levels, and she is a TOTAL WINNER! A Proud Mother of two children, Julia is a wonderful person, has ALWAYS delivered for Louisiana, and would continue doing so in the United States Senate. As your next Senator, Julia will work tirelessly to Grow our Economy, Cut Taxes and Regulations, Support our Amazing Farmers and Fishermen, Champion Louisiana Oil & Gas, Unleash American Energy DOMINANCE, Promote MADE IN THE U.S.A., Keep our Border SECURE, Stop Migrant Crime, Ensure LAW AND ORDER, Strengthen our Military/Veterans, and Protect our always under siege Second Amendment.

Should she decide to enter this Race, Julia Letlow has my Complete and Total Endorsement. RUN, JULIA, RUN!!! PRESIDENT DONALD J. TRUMP

Letlow had responded to the endorsement on Saturday, but did not say for sure at the time whether she would actually run.

“I’m honored to have President Trump’s endorsement and trust. My mission is clear: to ensure the nation our children inherit is safer and stronger. This United States Senate seat belongs to the people of Louisiana, because we deserve conservative leadership that will not waver,” she had written.

Cassidy had replied on Saturday, “I’m proudly running for re-election as a principled conservative who gets things done for the people of Louisiana. If Congresswoman Letlow decides to run I am confident I will win.”

Monday night, Cassidy touted his $26 million “war chest.”

Letlow announced some personal news in December. After losing her husband four years ago, she has found love again, and is now engaged to be married.
