From Fox News: Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., says he will vote to keep the government open, warning that a shutdown has worse consequences for Americans and would only empower President Trump and Elon Musk further.
“I believe it is my job to make the best choice for the country to minimize the harms to the American people. Therefore, I will vote to keep the government open and not shut it down,” Schumer said while speaking on the Senate floor on Thursday.
Democrats have criticized Republicans for their hesitation to pass government funding legislation, while their own party is currently on the brink of allowing a federal shutdown.
Schumer had declared on Wednesday that his party would vote against the spending bill which Republicans had drafted and passed in the House.
However, some Democrats weren’t completely on board with his push to oppose it, including Sen. John Fetterman (D-Pa.) who had said he would never vote to shut down the government.
Now, Schumer has caved.
“While the CR bill is very bad, the potential for a shutdown has consequences for America that are much, much worse. For sure, the Republican bill is a terrible option. It is not a clean CR, it is deeply partisan. It doesn’t address far too many of this country’s needs, but I believe allowing Donald Trump to take even much more power via a government shutdown is a far worse option,” Schumer said in his surrender speech.
He defiantly claimed that “there is nobody in the world who wants to shut the government down more than Donald Trump and Elon Musk… we should not give it to them.”

Rep. Thomas Massie (R-Ky.), the lone House Republican who voted against the bill, wrote, “Andddd… I was right. It was all performative. Of course Schumer was always going to go for the Continuation of the Biden-Schumer-Johnson 2024 spending agenda for the first 9 months of Trump’s presidency.”
