From the New York Times: An explosion at a U.S. Steel plant in Clairton, Pa., on Monday injured dozens of people, the authorities said, drawing emergency crews to what the authorities called a mass casualty incident.

Local news footage showed smoke billowing from the plant near a cluster of ambulances and other emergency vehicles. Part of a building appeared to have been sheared off and rubble littered the area.

“We’re up to about 15 ambulances,” with outside agencies assisting local fire and police departments, said Kasey Reigner, a public information officer with Allegheny County Emergency Services.

There were scant details available on the extent of the injuries and what caused the explosion at the plant, which is near the Monongahela River south of Pittsburgh.

According to ABC News, “dozens of people were hurt” and a rescue operation is underway as multiple people are trapped under the rubble.

Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro announced, “My Administration is in touch with local officials in Clairton, PA as they respond to an explosion at US Steel Clairton Coke Works plant this morning. @PEMAHQ and @PAStatePolice are in touch with first responders and have offered all assistance. The scene is still active, and folks nearby should follow the direction of local authorities. Please join Lori and me in praying for the Clairton community.”

Sen. John Fetterman (D-Pa.) wrote, “I was just on-site at the Clairton Coke Works. I’ve been talking with USW and US Steel officials to get more information. There is an active search and rescue underway, dozens injured, and per police there’s at least one unaccounted for.”
