Republican Rep. Byron Donalds of Florida announced in an appearance on Fox News Tuesday night that he has decided to run for governor of Florida in 2026.

President Donald Trump had released a statement last Friday, Feb. 21, encouraging Donalds to run and giving his endorsement.

Donalds, 46, was first elected to U.S. Congress in November 2020, and was just re-elected to his third term in November. Previously, he served four years in the Florida State House of Representatives, from 2016–2020.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis will not be able to run for re-election in 2026, as governors are only allowed to serve two consecutive terms in Florida. However, it has been speculated that Florida First Lady Casey DeSantis is considering running for governor herself.

Speaking to Fox host Sean Hannity Tuesday night, Rep. Donalds said, “I’m here to announce my candidacy as the next governor of the great state of Florida.”

“We have a great governor. Ron DeSantis has done a tremendous job for our state but now the job is to keep the best state in the country as the best state in the country, so that’s going to be the mission at hand. And I’m excited to announce my candidacy with you tonight,” Donalds added.

“I arrived in the Sunshine State at 17 years old on a Greyhound bus, with a trunk full of clothes and a dream. Now is the time to keep the best state in the country as the best state in the country. Tonight, I am proud to announce my candidacy to be the next governor of Florida,” Donalds announced.
