From the New York Post: A prominent nuclear science professor at MIT was shot and killed inside his home in a swanky Massachusetts neighborhood Monday night, with police mum on details of the tragic slaying.

Nuno Loureiro, 47, was found inside the Brookline house by police responding to reports of a man shot around 8:30 p.m., the Norfolk District Attorney’s Office announced on Facebook.

Loureiro was rushed to an area hospital, where he was pronounced dead Tuesday morning.

“This is an active and ongoing homicide investigation,” the DA said. “No further information is being released at this time.”

According to Brookline Police Deputy Superintendent Paul Campbell, Loureiro “had been shot multiple times,” but he would not release any further details.  Loureiro was reportedly shot in the foyer of his home.

No suspect has been identified or apprehended as of this report.

A MIT spokesperson confirmed that Loureiro, a native of Portugal, was a member of the school’s departments of Nuclear Science & Engineering and Physics, and director of the MIT Plasma Science and Fusion Center, one of the university’s largest labs with more than 250 full-time researchers.

He had worked at the prestigious college since 2016.

According to CBS News, a neighbor reported hearing three loud bangs Monday night. The neighbor noted that this is a state “where it’s so hard to even have a gun.”

Police were called to the home at 8:30 p.m. Monday evening. Loureiro was taken by ambulance to a Boston hospital, where he died Tuesday morning.

Many social media posts are saying Loureiro was Jewish, although one X user claimed he was not.

The X account Stop Antisemitism wrote, “We are hearing an MIT nuclear scientist professor – Nuno Loureiro age 47 – has been murdered in his home in Brookline, MA. Loureiro has been reported to be Jewish with strong pro-Israel views.”
