[UPDATED] BREAKING: Police respond to ‘active shooter’ at Florida State University, multiple injured, fatalities reported

UPDATE 4:30 PM ET:  Police now say two people are dead, five other victims are hospitalized, plus the shooter.  See new report for updated details.

UPDATE 2:00 pm ET Thursday: Multiple fatalities have been reported in a shooting at the Florida State University.

This is a developing story, and conflicting numbers are still being reported.

The Tallahassee Memorial Healthcare has announced they have at least six injured as of 1:45 PM. Five in serious condition, one in critical condition.

FBI Director Kash Patel wrote, “My team and I have been briefed on the tragic shooting at Florida State and our FBI Jacksonville team is on the ground assisting. We will provide full support to local law enforcement as needed. Please keep the FSU community in your prayers.”

FBI Deputy Director Dan Bongino also commented on the shooting, saying, “The FBI is on the scene at FSU. I am en route back to DC from our LA office but we are getting updates on the situation on the plane. We will update you as we learn more.”

At around noon on Thursday, police began responding to an “active shooter” situation at Florida State University in Tallahassee, Florida.

The shooting reportedly started in the Student Union.  According to a spokesperson at the Tallahassee Memorial Healthcare, at least four people with injuries have been brought to the hospital. Local media is reporting that police have taken one person into custody.

The university posted an “FSU ALERT” on social media, which reads, “[04-17-2025 12:01 PM] An active shooter has been reported in the area of Student Union. Police are on scene or on the way.

“Continue to seek shelter and await further instructions. Lock and stay away from all doors and windows and be prepared to take additional protective measures.”

Another post at 12:19pm ET reads, “This is a Emergency Message for Florida State University Tallahassee Campus. Continue to shelter in place. Police have responded to an active shooter call at the Student Union. Stay alert for more information.”

A video shows students fleeing for their lives.

News Channel 3 Now reported, “At least 4 victims at nearby hospital, witness reports seeing someone exit student union with handgun.”

An updated FSU ALERT at 12:39 pm ET reads, “This is a Emergency Message for Florida State University Tallahassee Campus. Continue to shelter in place. Police have responded to an active shooter call at the Student Union. Stay alert for more information.”

Student Garrett Harvey posted one video showing students running from the shooting.

In one video posted to social media, a victim is seen been carried out by police and paramedics.

Another video posted to social media shows students hiding in a classroom.

Another video appears to show someone being taken into custody:

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis wrote, “Our prayers are with our FSU family and state law enforcement is actively responding.”

Attorney General Pam Bondi announced, “The @FBI is on the scene at Florida State and we are in communication with agents on the ground. Our priority is the safety of everyone involved. We will keep updating as we learn more. Praying for all.”
