BREAKING: Police provide update on FSU shooting, shooter identified as son of sheriff’s deputy

Police held a press conference Thursday afternoon, following a shooting at Florida State University in Tallahassee at noon.

Police said a gunman opened fire in the Student Union at 11:50 a.m.

Two people are deceased, and five others are hospitalized with injuries. Neither of the deceased are students.

Police confirmed the shooter is a current FSU student, and is currently hospitalized as well, bringing the total of hospitalized people to six.

The shooter has been identified as 20-year-old Phoenix Ikner, the son of a Leon County Sheriff’s deputy. Police said he got access to one of his mother’s weapons, which was found at the scene of the shooting.

Ikner was on the youth advisory council for the Leon County Sheriff’s Office.

An FSU ALERT at 3:17 pm ET announced, “Law enforcement has neutralized the threat. Please avoid the Student Union, Bellamy, HCB Classroom Building, Rovetta A&B, Moore Auditorium, Shaw, Pepper, Hecht House and Carraway as they are still considered an active crime scene. Individuals are free to move about other areas of campus. Individuals who may have witnessed anything of value should call 850-891-4987.”

At 3:17 pm ET, the Tallahassee Police finally announced, “The @FloridaState campus has been secured. Multiple law enforcement agencies remain on site for the ongoing investigation. The Student Union & surrounding area are still considered an active crime scene. Individuals should not return to the area for any reason.”
