BREAKING: One GOP senator MIA for critical vote after Dem defectors relent, Senate reaches bipartisan deal to reopen government

6

Sunday night, the Senate is holding a critical vote to begin the process of ending the government shutdown. A bipartisan agreement has been reached, and enough Democrats have reportedly agreed to support it.  The voting is taking place, and Republicans are ONE VOTE SHORT of getting the deal pushed through.

One vote short, and ONE REPUBLICAN MISSING.  Everyone is asking, “Where is Sen. John Cornyn?”

Rumor has it Cornyn is not even at the Capitol, but is on his way from the airport.

Journalist Nick Sortor wrote, “John Cornyn is the FINAL VOTE we’re waiting on in the Senate to break the filibuster. Sens. Lee, Johnson, and Scott just voted YES. WHERE IS @JohnCornyn?!”

Sortor then added, “BREAKING: John Cornyn, who is the LAST VOTE needed to reach the 60 vote threshold, is NOT EVEN IN DC, per the Hill. Cornyn is currently “on his way” from Dulles Airport in Virginia. WTF, @JohnCornyn?! You couldn’t be bothered to show up to work??! You deserve to be FIRED!”

Rep. Wesley Hunt (R-Tex.), who is running for Cornyn’s senate seat, is also voicing outrage. “John Cornyn’s been whining about me missing votes, and now, when the nation and our President need every ounce of leadership, the man’s missing in action. So what is it, Senator… performance art or nap time while the Senate’s trying to reopen the government?” Hunt wrote.

Hunt added, “I’m “Mr. No Show?”… John Cornyn is literally on a milk carton right now while the Senate is trying to reopen the government.”

Breitbart’s Matthew Boyle wrote, “Seriously, John Cornyn should NOT have flown back to Texas this weekend. The Senate was in session for the weekend as Leader Thune made clear. Total misstep by Cornyn doing that. He wanted to be a U.S. senator that means you stay when the Senate is in session and you do your job.”

More details on the bipartisan agreement from Fox News: There are now enough Senate Democrats willing to back a revamped plan to reopen the government.

A source familiar with the newly-unveiled plan told Fox News Digital that there are enough Senate Democrats ready to join Republicans for a key vote Sunday night as Congress readies to reopen the government.

The latest development comes after an updated continuing resolution was revealed that would reopen the government until Jan. 30, 2026, reverse firings of furloughed workers carried out by the Trump administration and ensure that furloughed workers get back pay.

Senate Appropriations Chair Susan Collins, R-Maine, led the bipartisan deal, but a trio of Democratic caucus members, Sens. Angus King, I-Maine, Jeanne Shaheen, D-N.H., and Maggie Hassan, D-N.H., proved crucial in striking a way forward.

Lawmakers are expected to take the first of a trio of votes on reopening the government later Sunday night. But it will require action from the House before the closure is officially ended.

Returning to the White House Sunday night, President Donald Trump told reporters, “It looks like we’re getting close to the shutdown ending. You’ll know very soon.”

He reiterated that Republicans will never agree to give benefits to illegal aliens.

Sen. Markwayne Mullin (R-Okla.) announced Sunday night, “The U.S. Senate is about to take a KEY procedural vote to END the Schumer Shutdown. 10 Senate Dems have said they’re voting with us. WH is on board. Here’s a timeline breakdown of what happens next. Should be a matter of time.👇”

At 9:52 p.m. Sunday night, the Daily Caller announced, “8 Democrats voted yes on a motion to advance the bipartisan CR-minibus deal — a key step toward ending the shutdown. 1 vote short of passage. GOP Senator John Cornyn has still not voted.”
