From Fox News: The Nobel Committee awarded this year’s peace prize to Maria Corina Machado amid calls for President Donald Trump to receive the award in the wake of his brokering a historic deal between Israel and Hamas.
Machado, a Venezuelan opposition leader, was described as a “brave and committed champion of peace” by Joergen Watne Frydnes, chair of the Norwegian Nobel Committee.
“She is receiving the Nobel Peace Prize for her tireless work promoting democratic rights for the people of Venezuela and for her struggle to achieve a just and peaceful transition from dictatorship to democracy,” Frydnes said.
In a statement on X, the Nobel Committee announced:
This year’s Nobel Peace Prize laureate Maria Corina Machado has led the struggle for democracy in the face of ever-expanding authoritarianism in Venezuela. Ms Machado studied engineering and finance, and had a short career in business. In 1992 she established the Atenea Foundation, which works to benefit street children in Caracas.
Ten years later she was one of the founders of Súmate, which promotes free and fair elections and has conducted training and election monitoring. In 2010 she was elected to the National Assembly, winning a record number of votes. The regime expelled her from office in 2014. Ms Machado leads the Vente Venezuela opposition party and in 2017 helped found the Soy Venezuela alliance, which unites pro-democracy forces in the country across political dividing lines.
In 2023 she announced her candidacy for president in the 2024 presidential election. When she was blocked from running, she supported the opposition’s alternative candidate, Edmundo Gonzalez Urrutia. The opposition mobilised widely and collected systematic documentation that it was the true winner of the election. The regime declared victory and tightened its grip on power.
Ms Machado is receiving the Nobel Peace Prize first and foremost for her efforts to advance democracy in Venezuela. But democracy is also in retreat internationally. Democracy – understood as the right to freely express one’s opinion, to cast one’s vote and to be represented in elective government – is the foundation of peace both within countries and between countries.

The White House Responds
White House Director of Communications Steven Cheung responded by writing on X, “President Trump will continue making peace deals, ending wars, and saving lives. He has the heart of a humanitarian, and there will never be anyone like him who can move mountains with the sheer force of his will. The Nobel Committee proved they place politics over peace.”

Nobel Peace Prize chairman tries to justify not honoring Trump with award
There have been a multitude of people who had been calling for President Donald Trump to receive the Nobel Peace Prize, especially considering the effect that he has helped negotiate the end to 7 wars, and just now announced what appears to be the 8th one, with the peace agreement deal between Israel and Hamas.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was one of those calling for the prize to go to Trump.

The report notes that the deadline for nominations was January 31, meaning Trump could be eligible for next year’s prize.
However, when asked, Nobel Committee Chair Jørgen Watne Frydnes said it wasn’t just the timing that prevented the prize from going to Trump. Instead, Frydnes literally implied that President Trump doesn’t deserve the Nobel Peace prize.
Frydnes told reporters, “In the long history of the Nobel Peace Prize, I think this committee has seen many types of campaign, media attention. We receive thousands and thousands of letters every year of people wanting to say what, for them, leads to peace. This committee sits in a room filled with the portraits of all laureates and that room is filled with both courage and integrity. So we base only our decision on the work and the will of Alfred Nobel.”
