DC US Attorney Jeanine Pirro revealed that both soldiers had only been sworn into the West Virginia National Guard days before the attack.
Afghan soldier Rahmanullah Lakanwal, brought to the US in 2021 under Operation Allies Welcome, is accused of ambushing soldiers in D.C. Pirro blamed the Biden administration for allowing Lakanwal into the country.
Pirro called the incident a “brazen and targeted attack” carried out by a “lone gunman” who ambushed them without provocation.
It has also been revealed that Lakanwal drove across the country from his home in Bellingham, Washington, to arrive in D.C. before the Wednesday afternoon terror attack. He used a .357 Smith and Wesson revolver.
Lakanwal was shot by another Guard member and also remains in the hospital, Pirro said
He will be charged with three counts of assault with intent to kill while armed and possession of a firearm during a crime of violence.
The CIA announced on Thursday that Lakanwal had previously collaborated with the U.S. government, including the CIA, as a member of a partner force in Kandahar. This partnership ended in 2021 with the withdrawal of U.S. forces from Afghanistan.
Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem said on X that Lakanwal was paroled into the U.S. on Sept. 8, 2021, under Operation Allies Welcome.
President Trump described him as “a foreigner who entered our country from Afghanistan, a hellhole on Earth,” in a video message late Wednesday.
Lakanwal’s status was extended “under legislation signed by President Biden,” Trump explained.
“Our hearts are heavy in DC and across the nation today,” D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser said in a post this morning on X. “This Thanksgiving, we encourage you to take care of each other — be kind, be gracious, be a good neighbor.”
