From the Associated Press: A helicopter crashed Thursday into the Hudson River just off Manhattan, killing six people, officials said.

The fire department said it received a report of a helicopter in the water at 3:17 p.m. A official told The Associated Press that six people were aboard, and all were dead.

Videos posted on social media showed the Bell 206 mostly submerged, upside-down in the water. Multiple rescue boats were seen circling the aircraft.

The rescue craft were near the end of a long maintenance pier for a ventilation tower serving the Holland Tunnel. Fire trucks and other emergency vehicles were on streets near the scene with their lights flashing.

According to media reports, the victims included a family from Spain who were touring the city by helicopter.  Multiple sources say there were six people on board: The pilot, plus two other adults and three children.

Based on video footage and screenshots, the rotor blades appear to have become detached from the helicopter, causing the helicopter to plummet into the river in a free-fall.

In the terrifying video below, the helicopter is seen falling from the sky into the water.

The helicopter was seen falling into the water, and then the blades fell into the river in a second splash.

U.S. Attorney for the District of New Jersey Alina Habba wrote, “Actively monitoring the helicopter crash in the Hudson River. I have instructed my federal officials to assist with anything requested or necessary to get to the bottom of what happened. Pray for the lives lost.”
