From The Hill: Rep. Don Bacon (R-Neb.) officially announced on Monday that he would not seek reelection in 2026, opening up what will likely be a competitive race for Nebraska’s 2nd Congressional District.
“After consultation with my family and much prayer, I have decided not to seek reelection in 2026 and will fulfill my term in the 119th Congress through January 2, 2027,” Bacon said in a statement.
“After three decades in the Air Force and now going on one decade in Congress, I look forward to coming home in the evenings and being with my wife and seeing more of our adult children and eight grandchildren, who all live near my home. I’ve been married for 41 years, and I’d like to dedicate more time to my family, my church, and the Omaha community,” he continued. “I also want to continue advocating for a strong national security strategy and a strong alliance system with countries that share our love of democracy, free markets and the rule of law.”
Bacon is known for frequently voting against legislation endorsed by President Trump, and is called a ‘RINO’ by many conservatives.
According to a report by Politico, Democrats are expected to try to flip the seat. Politico wrote:
Bacon is a key GOP centrist in the House and represents one of only three Republican-held districts that Kamala Harris won in the 2024 presidential election.
Bacon has met frequently with Nebraska state Sen. Brett Lindstrom in recent months, who Bacon allies view as the favorite to win the GOP primary to fill the seat. But Republicans widely believe Douglas County Sheriff Aaron Hanson has a better chance of winning the primary, and he’s spoken with GOP operatives about the race.
After consultation with my family & much prayer, I have decided not to seek reelection in 2026 & will fulfill my term in the 119th Congress through January 2, 2027. It has been an honor to serve NE-02 & I thank our constituents for trusting me to represent them. pic.twitter.com/qUnpQwPg3n
