BREAKING: Michigan synagogue attacker identified

From Fox News: The suspect in Thursday’s attack at Temple Israel in West Bloomfield, Michigan, has been preliminarily identified as Ayman Mohamad Ghazali, according to three law enforcement sources who spoke to Fox News.

U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) confirmed the name to Fox News and provided details of his immigration history.

Officials said Ghazali was born in Lebanon in 1985 and entered the United States on May 10, 2011 on an IR1 immigrant visa as the spouse of a U.S. citizen.

According to DHS, Ghazali applied for naturalization on Oct. 20, 2015 and became a U.S. citizen on Feb. 5, 2016. Authorities say Ghazali lived near Dearborn, Michigan.

Thursday afternoon, Ghazali drove a pickup truck straight through the doors of the Temple Israel synagogue in West Bloomfield Township, Michigan, considered one of the largest Jewish synagogues in the United States.

The vehicle sped into the building and down the hallway, striking one of the security officers working in the building. He reportedly began shooting once he got into the building, but a security officer shot back. The vehicle then caught fire inside the building. Ghazali died, either from being shot or from being burned in the fire.

Fox News correspondent Bill Melugin also shared the statement from DHS on X, and wrote, “DHS confirms to @FoxNews that the Michigan synagogue attacker has been ID’d as Ayman Mohamad Ghazali, a Lebanese national who first entered the U.S. in 2011 on an IR1 immigrant visa as the spouse of a U.S. citizen. He was naturalized into a U.S. citizen in 2016 during the Obama administration.”
